French Winemakers on Australian Terroir

Wednesday 16 July 6:00 - 7.30pm
Gryphon Gallery, Graduate Centre, University of Melbourne

To celebrate France’s National Holiday - Bastille Day - the University of Melbourne is pleased to present “French winemakers on Australian Terroir”, as part of the Borders & Crossings / Seuils et Traverses Bilingual Conference on Travel Writing and Tourism Studies. By way of a guided tasting and discussion, three French winemakers currently working in Australia will present their wines. They will explain how their diverse travel experiences and cultural influences contribute to their craft and how this is reflected in the wines themselves. After working their way around the world, these “flying winemakers” now call Australia home, but why? Dr Jacqueline Dutton and Ms Amie Sexton (French Studies Program, University of Melbourne) will offer some preliminary hypotheses, presenting a summary of a new and innovative research project that will explore cultural differences in attitudes to French and Australian wine in France and Australia. Of interest to wine producers, retailers, educators and consumers, this project is the first step towards creating research networks between the University of Melbourne and the French and Australian wine industries.

Ninth generation winemaker,
Dominique Portet, is the first
to establish a winery and label
bearing the family name - not in
Bordeaux, nor the Napa Valley,
but right here in the Yarra Valley.

Gilles’ winemaking philosophy
is strongly influenced by his
French roots. Born in Cluny,
Burgundy, into a winemaking
family, his passion for wine took
him beyond the vineyards of Dijon
to Tuscany and Chile before landing
in Australia in 2001.

Dynamic young French winemaker,
Loïc Le Calvez, developed an interest
in wine while working in his father’s fine
wine store in Brittany. After studying
winemaking in Bordeaux, he came to
Australia in 2002 to Taltarni and
Clover Hill.
