Travel Writing and Photography Workshops
As part of the interactive programme of the Melbourne Festival of Travel Writing, we are offering two different workshops. Numbers are strictly limited to 20 places per workshop, so register early to avoid missing out!
Travel Writing Workshop with Thomas Swick
Sunday 20 July 11am – 4pm
Are you ever tempted to write about the places you visit - for an audience larger than your friends on Facebook? Travel writer Thomas Swick breaks the process down into three parts: 1) the preparation before you go, 2) the observation and participation while on site, and 3) the writing.
The author of two travel books, Swick gives tips on insinuating yourself into the life of a place, and offers instruction on how to use elements from fiction - characters, dialogue, a personal voice, a point of view - to create nonfiction stories that entertain and educate about the world.
Travel Photography Workshop with Greg Elms
Sunday 20 July 11am – 4pm
Considering a career in travel photography or combining your words with images? Lonely Planet travel photographer Greg Elms has 15 years experience in the field and will host a four-hour illustrated workshop in the basics. Learn how to understand and use available light; appreciate image dynamics; and respectfully approach photographic subjects. Participants are encouraged to bring their own work (max 6 images) for feedback. If you register for either of these workshops you will receive a free weekend pass including admission to all sessions.
