"I well remember, long ago, my pleasant times with French classes at the Shof."

The Right Honourable Sir Ninian Stephen KG AK GCMG GCVO KBE
A member of the Légion d’honneur, Sir Ninian served as a judge on the Supreme Court of Victoria (1970-72), Justice of the High Court of Australia (1972-82), Governor General of Australia (1982-89), and as a judge on the International Criminal Tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia (1993-97).

"The project is a very appropriate one to undertake in the present difficult situation of universities where modern languages commonly get a poor deal. It is also very appropriate in its emphasis on interdisciplinary studies."

Professor Elliott Forsyth
Professorial Fellow of the University of Melbourne and Emeritus Professor at La Trobe University

"Un très vif merci et toutes mes profondes félicitations pour cette heureuse initiative que vous venez de mener à bon terme, celle de la constitution d’une fondation destinée à donner un nouvel envoie aux études de langue et de littérature française, et bien au-delà..."

Ms Isabelle Costa de Beauregard Robertson
Former French Consul General in Melbourne

... "my life and career have, as for many of those who have endorsed the Fund, been shaped by France, the French language, law and the theatre, for which I am most grateful for my education at the University of Melbourne."

Michael Bula
Solicitor and Notary, Chevalier dans l’Ordre National du Mérite, founder-director of Melbourne French Theatre Inc. and Honorary Consul General of Senegal.

"I think I am someone who has benefited a great deal from the focus of French Studies at the University being broader than the language itself. I think offering students in languages the chance to read broadly across the humanities and be recognised for these efforts is one important way of equipping individuals with the capacity for independent critical thought. I personally also tended to find it at turns interesting and a lot of fun."

Steven Macmillan
Former Honours student in French at the University of Melbourne
